Environmental consequences of pig production scenarios using biomass from rotational grass-clover leys as feed

چکیده

Production of pork based on monoculture cereal-based cropping systems causes substantial environmental pressures and feed-food competition. This study evaluated the consequences five different scenarios involving inclusion rotational grass-clover leys incorporation biomass in pig diets: (1) a conventional reference scenario without biomass; (2) with replacement feed silage total mixed ration, i.e., replacing other feed; (3) an organic using for enrichment purposes only; (4) additional green manuring; (5) pasture to replace feed. The functional unit was 1 kg slaughter weight system boundary from cradle farm gate. We used life cycle assessment, introductory carbon balance method human edible conversion efficiency assess performance production system. Introducing as ration diets, reduced climate impact (-17%), eutrophication (-7.1%), marine (-15%), energy use (-13%), competition (-20%) per meat, while acidification (+2.7%) land (+1.5%) were slightly increased compared reference. lower (without considering soil change) attributable fertilizer diesel needs due pre-crop effects. Overall, feeding decreased several categories, improved by introduction leys.

Estimation of the Botanical Composition of Clover-Grass Leys from RGB Images Using Data Simulation and Fully Convolutional Neural Networks

Optimal fertilization of clover-grass fields relies on knowledge of the clover and grass fractions. This study shows how knowledge can be obtained by analyzing images collected in fields automatically. A fully convolutional neural network was trained to create a pixel-wise classification of clover, grass, and weeds in red, green, and blue (RGB) images of clover-grass mixtures. The estimated clo...

Increased Foraging in Outdoor Organic Pig Production—Modeling Environmental Consequences

Consumers' motivations for buying organic products include a wish of acquiring healthy, environmentally friendly products from production systems that also ensure a high level of animal welfare. However, the current Danish organic pig production faces important challenges regarding environmental impact of the system. High ammonia emissions arise from outdoor concrete areas with growing pigs and...

Milk production of fall-calving dairy cows during summer grazing of grass or grass-clover pasture.

Milk production of fall-calving dairy cows during subsequent summer grazing was evaluated in two consecutive years using a total of 80 mid- to late-lactation Holsteins. Cows calved during September and October and grazed from April to August in the following year. In yr 1, 27 cows grazed a native grass pasture and 13 cows grazed a native grass-clover mixed pasture containing 26% red clover and ...

Impact of environmental pollution on the growth and production of Egyptian clover

The present study investigated the impact of environmental pollution, represented in soil, irrigation water and air heavy metals, on the growth and production of Egyptian clovercultivated at south Greater Cairo, Egypt. Plants were sampled through five quadrats (0.5×0.5m), distributed equally in four cultivated farms in unpolluted and polluted sites, at theharvesting time. In addition, soil, air ...
